Christian Science first came to my attention about twenty years ago through the healing of a man who had been one of the leading business men of the city in which I was residing at that time, but who, on account of the drink habit, had long since ceased to give any attention to his business, his family, or his friends. When I first saw him he was tottering on the brink of ruin. He would come into the hotel where I was employed and make of himself a general nuisance. However, one day he dropped out of our sight.
About three weeks later a new man walked into the hotel. This man was clean-shaven, he wore clean clothing, neatly pressed, his shoes were shined, his head was erect, his step quick and firm, his eyes clear, his face radiant with joy and confidence. It did not seem possible that this could be the same man who had made such a nuisance of himself a few weeks before. He had been healed through Christian Science. A few evenings later this gentleman, carrying a book in his hand, approached the hotel desk during the time I was on duty, and asked if he might leave the book until he returned. Immediately I noticed that it was "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and when he called for his book, I said in a very flippant manner, "Well, how is Christian Science?" With such positive assertion that his sincerity could not be doubted, he looked me straight in the eye and said, "Young man, Christian Science is the greatest thing in the world."
That night, after thinking over the subject, I decided that if Christian Science could make a new man out of that fellow, it could make a new person out of anyone. The next day I made inquiries and found that there were many interested in this wonderful truth, among them my employer's wife and one of the employees, who, when she learned of my interest, went to the Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed Science and Health for me. Then and there began the beautiful unfoldment of the truth, which convinced me also that "Christian Science is the greatest thing in the world."
