PERSISTENCE IN TRUTH

From the November 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 400), "By lifting thought above error, or disease, and contending persistently for truth, you destroy error." In our daily experiences this scientific truth will be found of inestimable value, and especially will it be appreciated when error may be claiming to be stubborn in its manifestations of discord. Every declaration of Truth based upon an understanding of God heals and uplifts, for the truth displaces evil suggestions and knows no opposition. As Mrs. Eddy further says (ibid., p. 475), "To Truth there is no error—all is Truth." This fact is a staff upon which to lean, for it shows plainly that there are not two powers forever striving against each other, but that there is only one power, even the power of God, forever supreme and triumphant. It matters not what objectification error may seem to have, its claim to being is a falsity and the alert student cannot be mesmerized into believing its lies. Error has no real manifestation, for Truth is All and fills all space.

Let us realize in our honest efforts to prove the above statements of our Leader that we do not have to war against things or persons, but that our work is to resist the insinuations of aggressive mental suggestion which continually claim to force themselves into our consciousness. This work may be successfully accomplished and these false claims nullified as we succeed in assimilating more and more of the true spiritual ideas that are ever pouring forth from inexhaustible, infinite Love. These impartations are ceaseless and unobstructed and they declare man to be ever holy, upright, pure, and free.

We should cultivate persistence in this right endeavor, knowing that evil is nothing but false belief, and that as such it has no power to enforce its supposed claims, nor to argue for stubbornness in yielding to the truth. It has nothing to hold to, no channel through which to operate. It came from nowhere and has nowhere to return to. In other words, evil, or material belief, is an illusion, a mistake which, when corrected and replaced with the specific truth concerning it, fades out, for it cannot exist in the presence of eternal, radiant Love.
