The human race, periodically beset by distress and woe, has repeatedly sought surcease in a multitude of new theories and experimental practices, social, political, and economic, only to find itself sooner or later again sunk in the mire of gloom and depression. No permanent human remedy has ever been found. But to all who gain some insight into the vastness of Christian Science and some perception of its unlimited applicability and power, this Science offers the infallible and permanent remedy for all the ills of mankind.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 229) Mrs. Eddy makes a very important statement regarding the source of evil in human experience. She writes, "By universal consent, mortal belief has constituted itself a law to bind mortals to sickness, sin, and death." Continuing she says, "The so-called law of mortal mind, conjectural and speculative, is made void by the law of immortal Mind, and false law should be trampled under foot." This statement, containing no exceptions of time, place, or circumstance, Christian Scientists accept as applying to every form of inharmony manifested by human beings. And does it not point to the solution of the dire problems of the present day? In fact, does it not indicate the only sure means of escape from the world's burden of woe? Since it is individual consent to the universal and specific false claims of evil that gives them their apparent validity in human experience, is it not obvious that the sure escape must come from individual dissent from those claims, and through spiritual understanding nullifying their presumptuous authority? Since this is so, it is the duty of every Christian Scientist to take upon himself the responsibility of applying the healing power of Christian Science until the victory is won, and not only the individual but the whole world is released from the onslaught of supposititious evil.
Since Christian Science is the way of escape, how is it to be made effective except by the individual and cumulative effort of those who have the knowledge of its practice?
