WHAT CANNOT LOVE DO?

From the November 1935 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What is more heartening in times of trouble than the love of an understanding friend? How much more assuring it is to know that divine Love is always present to protect us and guide us safely through every human experience! How secure we feel knowing there is never an instant when Love is not expressed and manifested by God's true likeness, man! Great peace and joy and achievement come from understanding and reflecting Love. Our spiritually inspired Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 113): "Divine Love is our hope, strength, and shield. We have nothing to fear when Love is at the helm of thought, but everything to enjoy on earth and in heaven."

A very distressing condition is the lack of harmony which often results in a lack of that which seems to be required for human subsistence. Many have learned how essential a genuine sense of harmony is to one's peace, prosperity, and success; how necessary it is in the club, caucus, or convention, in business, government, or domestic affairs, in the street, or even in solitude. Mortal discord excites the animal propensities, depresses human hope, and defers the demonstration of infinite good. It temporarily impedes the progress of men and nations. Great waste comes of its indulgence.

The great Master, Christ Jesus, considered harmony a primary essential to Christian healing and demonstration. So apparent was the need of harmony in human relations that he gave a "new commandment" for the guidance of his followers, "That ye love one another." His mission was to teach us the law of divine Love, the way to all good and to eternal life. Setting forth his basic Christian law, he said, "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you." Where-ever and whenever the occasion was presented, he mastered human hatred, envy, and jealousy with love.
