Although my parents were atheists, I was sent to Sunday school. In my girlhood the Bible gave me inspiration, comfort, guidance, and strength; and in my teens I spent a year training for missionary work at a Bible institute in this city. My first call came from Hartford, Connecticut, where I spent twelve years at the American School for the Deaf. After resigning from that post, I returned to New York. Some time later, in a tearoom which I was managing, I met a woman who impressed me as being an unusual and beautiful character. One day while talking with her, I mentioned that I felt God had led me to this work of organizing and planning the tearoom, which was to pay its women employees a uniform wage, for I had not sought the place; and now a man calling himself the factory manager was endeavoring to force me to leave before my contract expired. This lady said to me, "If this is not your place, God has a better one for you," and at the same time she handed me a pamphlet on Christian Science, entitled, "The Father's Business."
This was my first introduction to Christian Science. As I read and reread the little pamphlet, I became convinced that if it was true, I had never so far really understood God. Eagerly I sought further information from this friend, bought "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and all the other writings of Mrs. Eddy, and studied until the early hours of the morning, trying to apply what I had read. Within the next five months I was healed of resentment to the point where I could think of the factory manager as my brother. One day while coming out of an office building I saw him and greeted him with a joyous and hearty "Good morning." The next day I received word from my attorney that I should receive a check in full for my contract, which had not expired. This was my first demonstration of the power of Love. Very soon thereafter I found that I was completely healed of severe headaches, from which I had suffered since childhood. At the same time I found myself reading without glasses. Both of these healings have proved to be permanent over a period of twenty years.
In June, 1935, I spent six weeks at The Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where I had gone to recover from the effects of a very severe shock. I was practically helpless when I arrived at the Sanatorium, and within the time mentioned the healing was effected. I shall never forget the love and understanding of the associates and of my practitioner which I experienced while there.
