On arriving at a small town in...

From the June 1938 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On arriving at a small town in Alaska, I attended a lecture on Christian Science and was convinced of its truth. The word did not return void, for I was immediately healed of a chronic difficulty from which I expected no relief. The regular church services were attended, and I read much of the time. With unbounded joy I found these words of Mrs. Eddy: "All that is beautiful and good in your individual consciousness is permanent. That which is not so is illusive and fading" (Unity of Good, p. 8) Other inharmonious conditions disappeared during the months of eager reading which followed, including indigestion, sluggish liver, sick headaches, and deafness; also a closed nostril opened; while an increase in weight indicated great improvement.

One winter morning while in Alaska I stepped outside for a moment without putting on a coat. The door closed behind me, and I was locked out for almost an hour with the temperature thirty degrees below zero. The following morning I awoke in much suffering with the familiar symptoms of peritonitis. From the bed I was able to reach a copy of Science and Health, and became absorbed in reading. An immediate healing was experienced, the proof of our Leader's statement (Science and Health, p. 14):"Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, —neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well."

More recent healings have included those of two sprained ankles, loosened teeth, fallen arch of the right foot, and inflammation of the bladder, some of these taking place immediately when I recalled a passage from the Bible or the writings of Mary Baker Eddy.
