The prophet Isaiah foretold the...

From the January 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The prophet Isaiah foretold the appearing of the Messiah, which would give "beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." It was in this manner that Christian Science came to minister to me when I was in deep sorrow. Through the work of a consecrated practitioner I was healed of grief and of a very serious mental and physical illness that sometimes accompanies intense grief.

I have also been healed of chronic constipation for which I had been treated since childhood by many physicians. The trouble finally became aggravated with hemorrhoids, and in desperation I went to a Christian Science practitioner and received complete healing in nine days' treatment. This healing took place more than twenty years ago and has been permanent.

During the year 1932 a hidden mortgage against my home was uncovered by a liquidating agent for a defunct bank. The mortgage was large and of long standing, with accumulated interest; therefore it was impossible for me to assume it. The person who had taken out the mortgage was the same person who had sold me the property, and he claimed that it was a mistake, that he had meant it to be on another property. My lawyer, the banker, and members of my family said they could not see how I could save my home without assuming the mortgage.
