Gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me prompts me to give this testimony.
During the winter of 1934 I was suddenly taken ill with what was a day or so later diagnosed by a physician as pneumonia. The practitioner immediately advised the services of a nurse, and later on a second nurse was brought on the case. That the truth is potent, and heals when applied as we are taught to apply it through the study of Christian Science, is the reason for my being able to give this expression of gratitude. There was a time during this illness when apparently I had ceased to breathe. I regained consciousness, and heard the practitioner, who was standing at the foot of my bed, calling to me to repeat, "God is my Life." This I did, and from that moment on the healing began and was slowly completed. The two nurses whom it was my privilege to have in attendance, were graduates of The Christian Science Benevolent Association Sanatorium, in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Their devotion to duty and alertness in the detection of error were great factors in the overcoming of that condition. I shall never be able fully to express my gratitude for the patient and loving help of the practitioner who devoted her entire time to me during the most trying period of my illness. At any time during the day or night a call for help was answered; and during the day there were times when the practitioner remained at my bedside for hours at a time, and with a clear knowledge of man's relationship to his Father, was able to see and know the nothingness of the claims of mortal mind.
Hymn number 374 in the Christian Science Hymnal will always stand out in my thought. It was read to me the first thing each morning by the day nurse, and always carried the message of God's protection.
