OUR DUTY TO OUR LEADER

From the February 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The appearing of the Christ, Truth, in Christian Science has roused the world. The human consciousness, beclouded with sin and sickness, is being illuminated by the penetrating rays of divine light. The beneficence of spiritual understanding is being felt, as it was through Jesus' teaching two thousand years ago. Ignorance, suffering, and religious indifference are being challenged. Christ Jesus' appeal, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," has been renewed today in the gracious invitation of Christian Science to come and be healed. The effect of this Science is regenerative; its scope is universal.

In the Manual of The Mother Church Mrs. Eddy writes (Art. VIII, Sect. 6), "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind." This is a By-Law to which every alert Christian Scientist gives much consecrated thought. What constitutes our duty to God, to our Leader, and to mankind?

Our duty to God is to understand and obey Him. We must perceive the nature of God as divine Life, Truth, and Love, and understand man as His reflection. Searching diligently for spiritual understanding, we see and acknowledge the perfection of God and His ability and willingness to care for His children.
