When I was a very young child,...

From the February 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was a very young child, I questioned what it was that made Christian Scientists so different from other people. This curiosity, or desire to know, developed in my thought from having spent a summer with my mother at a hotel which was owned and managed by Christian Scientists, and where most of the guests were also interested in this religion. During the summer, though I was less than ten years of age, I was fully convinced that, if it was Christian Science which made these people so good and so happy, when I grew up I wanted to be a Christian Scientist. Today I feel that I owe to those faithful Christian Scientists more than words can express, because the seeds of divine Truth and Love, so tenderly planted in my consciousness at that time, have certainly grown into an understanding of God's love and protection. Through this understanding of divine Love I have experienced many beautiful healings, both financial and physical.

One of the physical healings was that of a broken bone in one of my legs. I slipped on the sidewalk, striking my anklebone on the pavement, and this caused me to fall. A man came to my assistance, lifted me up, and aided me to hop on one foot to a lawn curb, which was near, where I could sit down. This stranger seemed to be quite concerned and, although I explained that I would be all right in just a little while, he appeared to doubt this, and would not leave until I convinced him by walking away. Through clinging persistently to the truth, declaring, "God is my strength and my power, and I can walk with God," in less than half an hour I stood on both feet and walked the remainder of the journey to the office where I was employed. There remained only a little swelling and soreness for a few days. Some years later, to please a member of my family who does not understand Christian Science, I permitted an X ray photograph to be taken of the foot and leg, which disclosed that new bone had appeared at the time of the break. The doctor who took the X ray called my attention to this, and asked if I had ever broken my leg. This picture I have in my files today.

Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, speaks of mental surgery, and she also tells us on page 224 of Science and Health: "The power of God brings deliverance to the captive. No power can withstand divine Love." I acknowledge my healing as a proof that God's love never fails when we depend absolutely on Him, and I am glad to express my gratitude for the writings of Mrs. Eddy, which give to all who desire it the opportunity to learn what Christian Science is— the revelation of the Principle underlying the method Christ Jesus taught and practiced, when he healed all manner of sickness and sin.
