MAN'S DWELLING PLACE

From the April 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

FEW could have spoken with more profound knowledge than did David of the experiences which come to those who are determined, whatever the seeming difficulties and temptations, to find and establish their true relations with God. With supreme spiritual exaltation, and with dynamic conviction, he set forth where the place of safety, and the power which belongs to it, alone are to be found. "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty," wrote David.

When men learn to dwell in the secret place they commune with Spirit, they apprehend omnipotence, they enter into the eternal consciousness of man's oneness with Mind. This is that state of consciousness of which Mary Baker Eddy writes on page 334 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "The spiritual idea, Christ, dwells forever in the bosom of the Father, God, from which it illumines heaven and earth."

David must have known full well that this secret place can be no temporary abode, if it is to deliver men from the clamor of praise and blame, the curiosity, jealously, and hatred which beset the human race. To "abide under the shadow of the Almighty" demands earnest, unremitting prayer. It demands of us the constant reminder that we acknowledge no other power, operating through ourselves or through others, than that of omnipotence; that we permit no effort of the enemy, nor even, however well meaning, of those we deem friends, to interfere with or delay the operation of the divine will; that, continually alert, we protect our dwelling place from the snares and subterfuges, the storms and upheavals, of the carnal mind, operating through personal sense.
