HISTORY records many differing forms of government. Every government has the task of establishing a definite order, of serving specific purposes and aims, and of administering its laws. The higher the type of human government, the more it endeavors to assure the individual's right to freedom and happiness within the general framework.
History shows how peoples have rebelled against unjust forms of government. It tells us of many vain attempts to establish peace, freedom, and progress in human society. Humanity longs for a government that will establish peace and righteousness, one that will guarantee liberty for individual development.
We find in II Corinthians the word of promise which stills this longing: "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 393), "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government." And on page 125 she writes, "Reflecting God's government, man is self-governed."
