DOMINION OVER EMPLOYMENT

From the April 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A DEFINITION of employment is "that which engages or occupies." As students of Christian Science, we are primarily interested in that which pertains to Mind, or God. Therefore we look upon employment as a spiritual activity, and position as our relationship to Mind, God, regardless of our human vocation. Employment, to be harmonious, progressive, and fruitful, must be divinely mental. Our thinking, therefore, must partake of the qualities and nature of God and be governed by the law of divine Principle, Love.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 465) Mary Baker Eddy defines God as "incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." These terms are synonymous. To gain an understanding of them is important; so important, in fact, that Mrs. Eddy included all but the one—Principle—among the subjects of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. This, however, is covered in the Lesson, "God the Only Cause and Creator."

In order that our thinking may be imbued with Godlike qualities, that is, partake of the nature of God, it is clear that we must know what God is. When we have gained through Christian Science a measure of this understanding, it is our business and great privilege to conform thereto our thinking, which governs our living. May this not be what Paul meant when he admonished the Corinthians to cast down imaginations and every thought which was opposed to God? Is not this in accord with the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in the fifth chapter of Matthew? Here he names those who are blessed—the humble, the compassionate, the meek, the seeker after righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers; also those who are persecuted and reviled for expressing righteous qualities. Jesus also said, "He that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him."
