Several years ago, when I was in great darkness and distress, God answered my prayer for light and gently led me into Christian Science. After leaving a hospital, where I had spent many months, I fell down a stairway and was severely injured. I was scheduled to make my New York debut six weeks later as a concert singer. I was utterly confused. That evening I found myself wandering up an avenue praying fervently for light, and I was soon led to follow a crowd of people into a church. When I found that I was in a Christian Science church I turned to go, but an usher, noticing my confusion, kindly invited me to remain and hear the testimonies of healing. His loving-kindness, the readings from the desk, and the testimonies of healing so convinced me that God could heal me through Christian Science that I asked for a practitioner. I received loving help, and was instantaneously healed through an understanding of God as good, and of man as His perfect image and likeness. Six weeks later, in perfect health, I was able to fulfill my vocal engagement creditably.
One of the greatest of my healing, for which I owe Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, endless gratitude and love, was my complete recovery from loss of memory. Six months after I was led to Christian Science my husband passed on. Intense grief overcame me for a time, but I remembered the name of the practitioner, called upon her, and once again received immediate help. My complete recovery, however, was gradual. I was able to travel to Europe, and remained there for about four years. It took three and a half years for me clearly to realize that I was, in reality, God's perfect child, free and unafraid. This complete healing consisted of the return of speech, the overcoming of fainting spells in public, and an extreme fear of death and of appearing before audiences.
I also owe endless gratitude to our beloved Leader for providing Christian Science Reading Rooms throughout the world, where seekers for Truth may quietly and prayerfully study. During the period of years I was solving this problem I did not fail to spend many hours a day working out my salvation in one of these holy sanctuaries. It was here that I finally came to a clear realization of man's perfect, indestructible relationship with his Father-Mother God.
