"CHANGING THE UNIVERSE"

From the February 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On many sides today it is said, in effect, These are changing times, and we hope and pray that, in the end, the change will be for the best, and mankind will be truly benefited. Then, frequently, is added this question: "But how are we to analyze the situation intelligently and accurately; and how are we to dispose of the momentous happenings of the present hour?" In other words, What is the correct answer to the present world problem?

On page 255 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy makes this pertinent statement: "Eternal Truth is changing the universe. As mortals drop off their mental swaddling-clothes, thought expands into expression. 'Let there be light,' is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres."

"Eternal Truth is changing the universe"! What does that signify? First, that a change is necessary, and, secondly, that the change is definitely being made. And what is the change? Truth, by reason of its ever-presence and power, is uncovering and wiping out the opposite of itself, that is, error. The activity of Truth, then, signifies the detection and destruction of error, the substitution of Truth for error. And so, the activity of Truth in "changing the universe," is uncovering the myriad age-old claims or beliefs of error, evil, and bringing about evil's self-destruction. To human sense this widespread upheaval may be alarming and fearful, unpleasant and uncomfortable. The nature of error must, however, be exposed. Why?
