Whatever the present pretenses of evil may be, or however firmly they may seem to bind human society in chains, the Christian Scientist knows that God is supreme, and that His perfect law must continue to lead on the ages. We have it in Scripture that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." Over the head of a statue designed to commemorate the life of a great American reformer and defender of human rights are these words: "Whether in chains or in laurels liberty knows nothing but victories."
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy has written these words, so comforting and reassuring to us of today (p. 271): "Christ's Christianity is the chain of scientific being reappearing in all ages, maintaining its obvious correspondence with the Scriptures and uniting all periods in the design of God." The eternal light of Truth shines with unvarying steadfastness, regardless of how dark may seem the night of chaos and turmoil. It enables the distressed yet brave mariner to reach the haven of safety and find rest and peace.
Through the light of Christ, thought attains the true and perfect vision of reality, God's glorious creation. Jesus manifested the Christ, the light that "shineth in darkness," and of him the beloved John has written, "As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." To those whose belief or faith becomes illumined with the effulgence of understanding, there is revealed the spiritual nature of man, even the image and likeness of God.
