ENTERTAINING ANGELS

From the February 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The earnest and active Christian Scientist, through watchfulness and prayer, keeps his mental home orderly and harmonious, that he may receive angels or messages which come from God.

Through the study of Christian Science the student learns that his real home is spiritual, and that angels are entertained in spiritual-mindedness. In the Glossary in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy has given this definition of "angels" (p. 581): "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality." On page 299 she says, "Angels are God's representatives," and assures us that "by giving earnest heed to these spiritual guides they tarry with us, and we entertain 'angels unawares.' "

The Christian Scientist may do well to remind himself often of that invaluable prayer of the Psalmist, "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer." He needs diligently to examine the quality of his thought, for his need is so to purify his thinking that there will be no envy, revenge, dishonesty, or selfish desire lurking therein. He knows that he must be rejecting the false in order to receive and entertain angels, or spiritual thoughts. Entertaining these spiritual thoughts and putting them to the fullest test in daily activity brings the Scientist a wealth of spiritual blessings, and supply for his human needs. However, his accomplishment in this direction is in proportion to his courage and determination to know God as All-in-all, the perfect divine Principle, the cause and creator of all that is real and eternal. To know this is to prove that evil, the supposititious opposite of good, is an illusion, having no reality or power. Through patience and perseverance he finds false thinking giving way to the progressive unfoldment of spiritual consciousness. Thus he becomes joyously aware of his eternal unity with the Father-Mother, God. How inspiring it is to entertain angelic guests!
