Gratitude to God for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and for the consecrated life of our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who gave us Christian Science, impels me to give this testimony.
Fourteen years ago, while living in a large midwestern city, I was steadily losing weight and strength. Finally, acting upon the advice of others concerned, I visited a clinic where several X rays and tests showed that I was a victim of pulmonary tuberculosis. It being an incipient case, the doctors permitted me to go to my parents' home in the country for the prescribed six weeks' rest period. Having shown no improvement at the end of this time, I went to clinics in two other cities, where further X rays and tests were made, and I was then told that I must go to bed and remain there indefinitely, eat only certain foods, and faithfully take what to me was a most offensive medicine.
I complied with this program. One day, after nearly three years had elapsed, a loving sister who had been kept informed of my condition came to visit us. She had the definite mission in mind of presenting Christian Science to me. I was mildly interested, but at first it annoyed me when she would make any attempt to get on the subject, especially if she mentioned Mrs. Eddy's name. I noticed however that when she sensed my attitude she always lovingly changed the subject to other things. I was too fond of her openly to voice my opposition, and one night, feeling more tolerant and realizing faintly that she had a pure desire to share something valuable with me, I allowed her to talk freely of Christian Science. She told me what it does for mankind and how it had helped her and another member of her family, and as she talked I became more attentive.
