USHERING IN THE CHRIST, TRUTH

From the February 1942 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is unfolding to human consciousness a spiritual activity that can be truly appraised only as its divine Principle is understood. The great value of this spiritual activity and of its underlying Science is becoming more apparent as men appreciate the growing need for moral and spiritual regeneration if Christianity is to survive the carnal beliefs that appear to beset it.

Understanding the effectiveness of his teachings to bring regeneration in human thought, Christ Jesus urged upon his students the need for keeping this purpose ever before them in their individual practice. Referring to the spirituality which alone was certain to succeed in this healing work, Jesus said to his followers, "Ye are the salt of the earth," thereby indicating the fundamental importance of a moral and spiritual animus in all human thought and endeavor. Bearing this in thought, those who in the present day would demonstrate the truth which Christ Jesus revealed, must watch that they keep before them the regenerative purpose of their work and be not misled to regard merely material progress as the evidence of an inward spiritual well-being.

Ever watchful and alert to protect his thought against such subtle suggestion, the student of Christian Science turns to the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, ''Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for guidance, knowing with deep gratitude that his heavenly Father, divine Love, will point out the way of Spirit. Prayerful study of these inspired writings will reveal to him that Christian Science does not offer a material panacea by way of progress, for merely material progress provides no newness, no spiritual inspiration, and is actually only the expression of mortal thought. Progress, however great and grand, which follows strictly the line of materiality, is thus never new, never real, satisfying, or spiritual.
