NUTRITION AND FUNCTION

From the June 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The words "nutrition" and "function" in their common human meaning bear a relation to each other. Without nourishment, that is, a supply of the essentials, no material organism can long function.

Consider a great river system like that of the Mississippi. Much of the commerce of a nation floats upon its waters. In its early stages it irrigates thousands of acres of fertile land. Power is generated from its flow. Its functions are many. But were it not constantly fed from unfailing sources, it could not long function.

The Hebrews perceived God to be source, origin. The Christian Scientist turns to this infinite fountainhead as the unfailing, rich, and abundant source of all true nourishment. He knows that it is divine Love and Truth which alone can and do provide his spiritual food—the bread and water of Life, his true nutriment. Thus fed, he must function freely, completely, actively, uninterruptedly animated by the Mind which gives him sustenance. For, says Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 151), "Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind."
