The demand of the times on every citizen of a democracy, as well as on his government, is to be strong. The world crisis confronting mankind challenges the desire for good in human consciousness to put forth sufficient energy to demonstrate the power of right, and thus free the world from domination by evil. Stern is the demand, and long the humanly predicted road to victory. Can humanity, unaided, meet this demand, shorten the road, and win? Many must be asking themselves this question.
Read in the light of the spiritual understanding which is acquired through the study of Christian Science, and applied specifically to the present global turbulence, Daniel's experience offers much encouragement. In the tenth chapter of this Biblical narrative, it is recorded that there passed before Daniel a vision of the nations at war. Daniel was weak and fearful when he accepted the suggestions of anxiety which always accompany the belief that man is mortal and the helpless victim of circumstances; but when he heeded the spiritual message that man is beloved, as the son of God, his strength, courage, and peace returned.
Christian Science, revealed to this age by Mary Baker Eddy, gives us spiritual understanding whereby the energy of human goodness, insufficient of itself to overcome the erroneous will of the carnal mind, is given up, and the invincible energies, forces, or will of the divine Mind are acknowledged and demonstrated as ever operative and all-powerful. In an article on "Fallibility of Human Concepts" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 352) Mrs. Eddy says: "When human sense is quickened to behold aright the error,—the error of regarding Life, Truth, Love as material and not spiritual, or as both material and spiritual,—it is able for the first time to discern the science of good. But must first see the error of its present erroneous course, to be able to behold the facts of Truth outside of the error; and, vice versa, when it discovers the truth, this uncovers the error and quickens the true consciousness of God, good."
