Thirteen years ago life was most difficult for me because of a nervous condition, expressed in a fear of everything. It intruded itself in all my plans for my family and me. I was afraid to perform my duties, and many suggestions entered my thoughts that made me equally fearful of not serving my family. Long before this time I had exhausted nearly every means to overcome fear, which, even from a human point of view, was entirely ungrounded and silly.
The statement, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity," was surely true in my case, and I decided to start the study of Christian Science. Upon request, a friend gave me a number of copies of the Sentinel. I chose one and was divinely directed to turn to an article on the overcoming of fear.
I had been so eager to read that I had not removed my hat, coat, or gloves. I remained standing to read the article, and read it three times. As I turned, laid aside the Sentinel, and removed my gloves, I realized I was completely healed, free from the bondage of fear. The wonderful influx of Truth and light was almost more than I could humanly bear. I seemed to be treading on air; everything had changed. In all that my eyes beheld, all that I heard, was the greatest expression of beauty. All my life I had attended churches of various denominations, orthodox and those less orthodox, in search of the promises of the Bible, and had often listened to sermons about the omnipotence of God. For the first time in my life I knew, through the teachings of Christian Science, what the omnipotence and omnipresence of God really meant.
