In the present extremity of war and sacrifice, people are turning more than ever before to God to find an answer to their problems. The force of events often awakens in mortals a demand for a clearer light of reasoning as blind faith ceases to satisfy the thoughtful, and they find they can no longer reconcile the abominations of evil with the will of God. It is often at this point that individuals are ready for spiritual progress and for Christian Science.
The Christian Science church service is an open doorway which attracts such seekers. Consequently nothing must hinder our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly from quenching the human thirst for righteousness or right thinking; from feeding the hungry with "the bread of life," the great truth of spiritual being, which heals the sick and casts out evil; from pouring out the wine of divine inspiration so joyously and abundantly that human hearts are freed from fear and care, and refreshed and uplifted with the potency of spiritual understanding.
In these stormy times it may be well for branch churches and societies to look more closely within. The membership must make sure, with all humility and prayerfulness, that its light is brightly shining, that the earnest searchers may clearly see the way. The spiritual illumination which is shed in the services must not be dimmed or obscured by any phase of error which might act as a deterrent to the thought of the listeners. Furthermore, the spiritual food offered to the strangers within their gates must be well served, so that all may find what they gather to be rich with divine nourishment.
