Although mankind has been educated to believe that mortals are physical beings, living in a material world and subject to laws of limitation, the teaching of Mary Baker Eddy shows that actually mortals are materially mental; that as such it is possible for them to learn in Christian Science the facts of spiritual existence; and that at last mortal consciousness itself will yield to the allness of divine Mind, God, and cease to be an obstructing factor. To recognize the mental nature of all that seems to be material, and then to recognize Mind's dominion over belief or mentality, is to take an important step on the road to health, happiness, and the accomplishment of any worthful enterprise or purpose.
Only while we believe ourselves to be physical—that is, belonging to a phase of so-called animal life—shall we remain in bondage to a finite sense of things; for the only bondage there is, is the bondage imposed by a fearful, unspiritual, humanly multiple point of view. Plainly, therefore, it is not matter, but mentality or consciousness, which determines the condition of our bodies, the character of our homes, the state of our country, and the thousand and one other aspects of what we call our human experience.
In 1925, an article in a London newspaper commenting on a volume of essays entitled "Science, Religion, and Reality," discusses in detail the contribution in this book by Professor Eddington. It includes the following statements: "The laws of Nature . . . are not something imposed on an independently existing universe from without. Indeed, not only the laws of Nature, but space and" time and the material universe itself, are constructions of the human mind. ... To an altogether unsuspected extent the universe we live in is a creation of our own minds."
