EVIL HAS NO ORIGIN

From the November 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Where does evil come from? is a question which puzzles many people. What is its origin? "The origin of evil," says Mary Baker Eddy, "is the problem of ages. It confronts each generation anew" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 346). The answer to this question is to be found through the understanding of spiritual reality—the allness of God, Spirit—which Christian Science inculcates.

Let us see what it is that puts this question, Where does evil come from? The question is a thought. What thinks it? Is God, infinite intelligence, positive Mind, inquiring concerning what is negative and godless? Can supreme intelligence conceive of, or put a question concerning, its ignorant opposite? God is incapable of inquisitiveness concerning evil, falsity. As the Scriptures put it, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity." The all-knowing Mind knows all that is knowable and knows nought of ignorant, enigmatical evil.

Is it then man, the son of God, who asks where evil comes from? Man is totally and perpetually engaged in reflecting the all-knowing God. This is his unalterable status. He can no more inquisitively question concerning evil than can God, his only Mind and Life.
