NEW BIRTH

From the November 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
Why fear we then that mankind can lose aught
Of lasting value? Always, wrong has brought
To pass its own destruction; always, might
When based on cruel force has lost the fight
At last. Let us now consecrate each thought
To make the battle swift and sure. Let nought
Discourage us; hold fast the goal in sight!

When mammon is no longer crowned as king,
Nor culture based on intellect alone,
Then moral strength and gentleness can bring
True peace and power, that they may atone
For arrogance and vice. Judge of the earth,
Help us desire and hasten this new birth!
