THE PRIMAL QUALITY OF LIFE

From the November 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In her answer to the question, "What is intelligence?" Mary Baker Eddy writes, in part, "It is the primal and eternal quality of infinite Mind, of the triune Principle,—Life, Truth, and Love,— named God" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 469). What glorious, concordant activity this implies —intelligence, the basis and continuity of all existence! How rich and fruitful every detail of life must be!

"This is visionary idealism," someone unacquainted with Christian Science may say. But Mrs. Eddy's great discovery is not visionary, for it is the available, demonstrable law or Science of man's being. Christian Science brings to light the present boundless blessings of our true and only real existence, while it uncovers and dispels the myriad illusions of evil that rob and mislead humanity.

Mortal belief, masquerading as intelligence, often appears in seemingly harmless guise; but its destructive tendencies are concealed beneath the garb of human goodness and worldly wisdom. The Bible warns us of "the little foxes, that spoil the vines." The "little foxes" sometimes nullify what would otherwise be noble accomplishments and demonstrations of happiness or health.
