One memorable day, after I had been for six weeks a helpless cripple under the sentence of twelve to eighteen months more of suffering, I asked for a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was not long in discovering that its pages presented the God of love for whom I had been instinctively seeking for many years.
For six weeks I had experienced unbearable pain whenever I lowered my left leg. No sleep was possible without the use of a sedative. Not a step could be taken without the aid of my wife or daughter. The physician in attendance stated that the chances of my dying before nature could take its course were about seven out of ten.
Although I had for years been antagonistic toward what I had thought Christian Science to be, my newly formed purpose to investigate it with an open mind led me, that day, to ask for the help of a practitioner, and with the first treatment a new sense of peace and well-being crept over me. That night I slept like a baby, with both legs in a normal position and without the use of a sedative.
