For many years I was not satisfied with the concept of God which had been taught me in my childhood. I often asked my mother why Christ Jesus did not heal us now as he healed people while he was on earth. I was told that such healing was for that day and age only, and that God had given us doctors and medicine for healing today.
Later, when I served as a Red Cross nurse in the first World War, I was troubled to hear ministers at the bedsides of patients praying that God would give these sufferers courage to bear the afflictions which He had sent upon them. I knew then that if this were true about God, I could not worship Him.
After marrying and having two children I became ill. Three doctors told me that I had diabetes, and an X ray showed a crooked spine, from which I had suffered for years. A friend, knowing my need, sent me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I began to read it, though with little understanding. I persisted, however, in my study of Christian Science, accepting the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 495, "Truth casts out error now as surely as it did nineteen centuries ago."
