As a child I craved something higher...

From the June 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As a child I craved something higher than the orthodox churches gave me. I asked many questions which were never answered to my satisfaction, and so I kept going from one church to another until I finally gave up going to church entirely. I came to believe that what I was seeking could not be attained until after death. I do not know how many times I had been told that the religion of Christ could not be understood now, but that after death enlightenment would come. One or two healings in Christian Science came to my attention near the time of my marriage, but I did not then know it was what I had been longing for.

When our baby girl was a few months old she was taken sick with pneumonia. I called a doctor, but she got no better. The second evening my husband's mother came to see her. She recommended that we call a Christian Science practitioner, and I asked her if she would do so. The doctor was discharged and the practitioner started to work for the baby. We all slept peacefully and the next morning our baby was almost fully recovered. She is now past fourteen and has never taken a drop of medicine or used any material remedy since that time. During these fourteen years other members of the family have experienced healings of colds, measles, chicken pox, constipation, blood poisoning, false appetite, temper, and intolerance, and we have solved many business problems harmoniously.

I learned to depend on Christian Science for healing and guidance in all things. One morning I awakened with a very severe pain in my right arm and shoulder. It was so extreme that for a time I could not work for myself as we are taught to do, and I asked for the help of a practitioner. Relief came quickly and soon I was able to study. The condition continued for about two months, and when my arm finally became almost useless and my hand numb I felt guided to ask for a diagnosis by a physician and surgeon. Before he was called, however, I made it clear to my family that I would not take any medicine or treatment from him.
