NOT "MISSING IN ACTION"

From the June 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Whenever a man in combat service fails to return to his base at a given time, or to reach a destination to which he has been sent, a message is sent to his next of kin stating that the soldier or sailor is "missing in action." This information is usually passed on to others by word of mouth or through the newspapers, so that in a very short time the belief of loss is quite generally accepted.

Unless the student of Christian Science who receives such a message, or learns that one has been received by others, watches his thinking carefully, he too is apt to accept and give credence to a sense of loss. The alert student, however, will immediately reverse the thought and, instead of accepting the report, will declare that because God governs the universe, not partially, but wholly and irrevocably, the one reported missing cannot be separated for a moment from God's protecting care, nor, can he ever be taken out of God's universe. God's kingdom is spiritual and comprises all that is real. Man is also spiritual and reflects God. Therefore, the words of the Apostle Paul are meaningful: "Neither death, ... nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." "For in him we live, and move, and have our being."

There is nothing new in the attempts of the carnal mind to cause separation, or to defraud men of their rightful place and enjoyment of good. From earliest history envy, jealousy, fear, hatred, greed, and lust for power and place have tried to bring about these results; but, as Isaiah noted, God's ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts than our thoughts. Evil can never overcome good.
