To unite mankind in such a way as to preserve the peace of the world and still allow opportunity for growth and development in each individual nation is a problem engaging the attention of many thoughtful men and women. Too long have people accepted the false suggestion that greed, national pride, jealousy, suspicion, and selfishness must forever prevent any effective international co-operation. But it is now realized that a way must be found whereby the nations of the world can unite. The solution of this problem is found in Christianity, whose Founder declared, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."
It is daily becoming plainer that false national pride, greed, selfishness, and suspicion, all of which find their root in flesh or materiality, can only lead to strife and destruction; whereas the spirit of unselfish service, justice, and kindly consideration quicken into strength and prosperity. The cement that binds nations lies in a knowledge of the power of Spirit and the powerlessness of the flesh. As Mrs. Eddy states (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 283): "Individuals, as nations, unite harmoniously on the basis of justice, and this is accomplished when self is lost in Love—or God's own plan of salvation."
God's plan of salvation from want and war is not impossible to understand or difficult to apply, since there is a law governing the relation of men and nations, just as there is a law governing the relation of numbers. The difficulty lies in the unwillingness of humanity to learn this law. Even the multiplication table would be useless to one who stubbornly refused to accept and therefore to learn it. God's plan of salvation consists in the understanding of God, of His nature and character, and of man and of the spiritual creation.
