USING CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

[Of Special Interest to Youth]

From the June 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes a sudden crisis precipitates the demand to do something about it, as was the case in the recent experience of a young man in the Navy. His ship was bombed. Although he was shocked and frightened, he still remembered to be thankful that the bomb had just missed the ammunition hold. This young man had been a member of a Christian Science Sunday School for a number of years previous to his entering the service. He tells his story like this: "I was frightened, but instantly I felt as though Christian Science poured over me. In a flash I saw that Christian Science was not something merely to read about or to talk about, but that it was something to do. Immediately I began using Christian Science."

But, one may ask, what does it mean, to do something about it? Briefly this: it is to place God first, instantly and constantly to realize His presence, power, and protection; to be so sure of His all-power that, no matter how bitter may seem the evidence of evil around one, he knows it to be powerless.

Christian Science is more than emotional, wishful thinking. It is more than faith, necessary and thrilling as this may be. It is scientific spiritual understanding, based on the Scriptures, the understanding of the life and works of Christ Jesus, as clarified to our present-day comprehension by that spiritually-minded woman, Mary Baker Eddy, the author of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
