DOMINION VERSUS DOMINATION

From the June 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In absolute Christian Science there is only one dominion, and that is the dominion of God, divine Principle. Principle governs all that exists in the harmony of its perfect law, the law of Spirit, divine Love. Nothing can resist this law, for it is the eternal fact of being. The understanding of spiritual law and its operation brings "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding," and that is the only real peace—God's dominion reflected by man.

But in the transitional state of consciousness which Christian Scientists have reached at present, dominion can be gained only by overcoming. There is a victory to be won before peace can be attained. Peace must be won at a price. Over what then have we to gain the victory?

One might reply, "Over all evil!" But does evil exist? Christian Science says, "There is none, since God, good, is infinite, All." So it is not evil, but the belief in and fear of it that have to be overcome. Today individuals and nations are being influenced by the paralyzing fear of evil. It presents itself in the guise of matter, as material substance, as power and law. Students of Christian Science know that it is their duty to resist the temptation to believe in material substance, material power and law by allying themselves daily and hourly with the only real power there is, namely, Spirit. In this way only can they rise above fear themselves and do their part in helping to lift the burden of fear from others. Fear is not a quality of God; therefore it is not a quality or characteristic of man. Man made in God's image does not fear. There is no fear in Truth. "God hath not given us"—or anyone or any nation—"the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." So wrote St. Paul to Timothy. Let us deny that fear has any control. Let us see that though it is the weapon of tyrants, it has no cause; hence no authority. In proportion as we rise above fear do we attain the peace which God alone can give us.
