MAN'S PLACE IS SECURE

From the June 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A sense of place is always with each of us. It answers, after a fashion, the question, "Where am I?" But too often our sense of place is not a happy one. One person feels unplaced, another misplaced, a third displaced. As one thinks he is placed so is he, for place is wholly mental, a state of thought—nothing less and nothing more. Place is not, as lying mortal mind suggests, a mere physical location, sometimes adorned, sometimes cluttered up, with mortal personalities. Place is entirely an idea which is ever with man. It must be so seen. Consider how Jesus thought of his true place as the Son, forever in God and His kingdom, doing His work. His sense of place was his oneness with infinity-filling Mind. This spiritual, true sense of place freed him from the lying concept of entombed physicality. God's image can never be so placed.

Our true individuality is always conscious of its satisfying, God-defined place. Our right sense of place is, indeed, as inseparable from us as is our consciousness, for it is coincident with, and ever in, our true consciousness. The all-knowing God knows all of His ideas as intelligently and lovingly placed by Mind, and each given of Mind to be forever conscious of its place.

Mortals often have difficulty in finding their place. Unhappiness often results from their failure to find satisfactory employment and harmonious home surroundings. Even in normal times many wrestle with the problem of a place to live and a place to work. To the millions who in these tragic times find themselves brought into strange places and unsought relationships, human life may indeed seem topsy-turvy. The questions come to many: What place shall I be in after the war is over? Can I be sure of a right, harmonious place in which to live and work?
