In the twenty-fourth chapter of Joshua we read, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." Many years ago I made a choice, and I should like to share this experience with others.
I was gravely ill, suffering from what doctors called chronic anemia. I became so weak that fainting resulted even from attempts to sit up in bed. I had tried many of the leading physicians, and had been hospitalized, but continued to grow worse. Finally, medical science gave me only a few days to live.
A friend recommended Christian Science treatment, and it was then proved that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." Notwithstanding the fears of loved ones and friends, I gave up medicine and sought Christian Science treatment. The practitioner worked faithfully, but because my work had made me known to the public, my case was widely discussed. One day the report went out that I was passing on. Although no one mentioned it to me, the suggestion had come to me also. I expressed this thought to the one who had told me of Christian Science. She repeated it to the practitioner, who insisted on talking with me, asking if it was true that I thought I was passing on. I told her it was true. Her reply was indeed a shock. She said, "If you believe that God cannot heal, why don't you call a doctor?" I did not understand her reason for saying this, but frankly told her that no man could do what God could not—that I would continue my reliance on God.
