"For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name" (Ps. 33:21). For many years I had suffered from organic heart disease. The time came when I realized that God was not to blame for our sicknesses and pain, so I decided to search the Bible for divine guidance and understanding.
I was a member of a Protestant church and loved it, for it had blessed me in many ways. My Christian parents and many of the clergy of that church had fostered in me a desire for things spiritual. Their prayers were not unanswered. I longed to know more about God. About this time, my parents having passed on, I moved into a new home, a few miles from my old one, and many new friends visited me.
What was it that impressed me so much in these new friends? It was their love for the Bible, the way they made me realize the meaning of these passages from the Scriptures (Jer. 23:23): "Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off?" and (Acts 17:28), "For in him we live, and move, and have our being." The words and works of Christ Jesus were spoken of in such a way as to bring a sense of the nearness of the Christ. These new friends were Christian Scientists.
