LISTENING TO THE VOICE OF TRUTH

From the August 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

OUR revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us on page 323 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": ''The effects of Christian Science are not so much seen as felt. It is the 'still, small voice' of Truth uttering itself. We are either turning away from this utterance, or we are listening to it and going up higher." In other words, by listening to "the 'still small voice' of Truth," we can through increased righteousness expect improvement in our human affairs.

Listening to the voice of Truth is communion. To commune scientifically with the Father necessitates the recognition of our true selfhood as spiritual and the shutting of the door of our thought to the whisperings of the material senses. If the door has been properly closed, human will or outlining will not be able to intrude upon our consciousness. The divine Mind communicates directly and constantly with man and needs no intermediary; hence our part is to realize our natural receptivity to Mind's ideas and thus become aware of what God's will is for us.

Communication from God to man is entirely spontaneous. Indicative of this is the thought expressed by Tennyson, "Prayer is like opening the sluice gate between our souls and God, when the sea gathers itself together and flows in at full tide." It is helpful to remind ourselves that the Apostle Paul used the word "let" when he advised the Philippians (2:5), "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."
