I first heard of Christian Science in 1900, when my husband's sister wrote me that this Science had healed her after the doctors said she could not get well. I was not interested enough then to look into it, and she did not mention Christian Science to me again until I asked for it, twenty years later.
At that time I had been sick for more than three years. The family doctor could not find the trouble, and after I had gone through several examinations and been operated on, he gave up my case. We called in a second doctor, who advised my husband to take me to a hospital in another state. The doctor at the hospital was considered one of the best in that state. He said my trouble was internal cancer and that I should have come to him six months earlier, that I was too weak for an operation, and he would not promise anything, but would do all he could. He said that I would be just as well off at home but wanted me brought back every month or two. When the third time came for me to go, I refused. I felt that I should die on the way.
Two weeks after this some copies of the Christian Science Sentinel were sent to me. When I saw them I remembered my sister-in-law's healing, and thought, If only I could talk to her about it. I had lost faith in the doctor, but he lived in the same city that my sister-in-law did and I knew I could see her if I would go to the doctor, so I consented to go again. When they were getting me ready I asked to have the Sentinels put in my bag.
