Christian Science is the Science of being; it is the truth of Life itself, the law of God, infinite good, which enables us to approach Him intelligently. This pure Science is unique and unparalleled; it cannot be compared to anything else, for it transcends and embodies all that is known or knowable. For this reason it can be compared to mathematics or to music only to illustrate by them, in a limited degree, its unchanging Principle and its applicability, for Christian Science has its own infinite realm in the one Mind, and human processes can only hint spiritual truth.
Mathematics is the computation of numbers according to a human system, and it can be taught by fixed rules and demonstration. In conjunction with mechanics it can be used for such practical purposes as the building of a bridge. The essential requirements can easily be calculated by the expert. Stresses and strains, bending moments, factors of safety, and the like are discovered by the use of well-recognized formulas which permit of little or no deviation because certain principles have been established to meet the case.
A Christian Science treatment, although based on fixed Principle, differs from mathematics in that there are no formulas to be used, and any attempt to use them is expressly forbidden in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy. The reason for this is that it is not possible humanly to formulate, codify, or regiment the things of Spirit. The approach to and use of spiritual law must always be through individual comprehension of divine Principle, God. How fortunate we are that this is so, and that each of us in the individual way of God's directing can explore and enjoy the universe of Love and find his own particular "mansion" or outlook from which to work.
