After visiting a physician and being told by him that I should have an operation because of a severe hernia, I crossed the street to a Christian Science practitioner's office. I told the kind woman who greeted me that I had had this hernia for several years and that the doctor had told me I should have an operation. She said, "Mortal mind has no history." Then she added, "Do you want Christian Science or materia medica?" I said that I felt I had to take Science, for I had attended the Christian Science Sunday School and had never used medicine, but I thought that my understanding was not good enough. She told me that I reflected God's unlimited understanding. She gave me a few pages to read in "Miscellaneous Writings" by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, while she gave me a treatment. The next day I called to tell her that resentment had been uncovered in my thought and it needed to be destroyed. The following day my healing was complete.
A few years later, when I was relating this healing to a friend, I said that the practitioner had had me read an article on spring house cleaning. We looked in the Concordance and found the article to be "Voices of Spring," starting on page 329 in "Miscellaneous Writings." I am now able to see clearly how the healing came about, By reading that article I put on the new, leaving no room for the old. My mental house was receiving a good cleaning.
As Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 332): "Spring is here! and doors that closed on Christian Science in 'the long winter of our discontent,' are open flung. Its seedtime has come to enrich earth and enrobe man in righteousness; may its sober-suited autumn follow with hues of heaven, ripened sheaves, and harvest songs."
