THE TRUE SENSE OF BODY

From the August 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

All who would discern and deal with the basic cause of disease and heal metaphysically must know how to make the distinction between the transient human body and man's true spiritual identity. All may learn through the God-inspired writings of Mary Baker Eddy how to make this distinction between the real and the unreal and demonstrate the scientific fact of being. Christian Science explains the material body as being the objectification of material thought, the counterfeit of God's man, who is Spirit's, Mind's, likeness, the immediate object of spiritual understanding, which Spirit feeds and clothes as its divine idea.

God, Mind, the only creator, makes man in His likeness; therefore the body or identity of the real man, formed of the substance of Spirit, Mind, can be understood only as Mind's incorporeal reflection. Hence it is with divine authority that Christian Science propounds the fact that since man is the idea of Mind, the real identity of man is wholly mental, spiritual. This spiritual identity of man consists of those ideas and qualities which express God, Spirit.

Mankind believes man's life is in a physical body. However, only false material thinking can be conscious of the material body, because Spirit, God, the only Mind, cannot be cognizant of its opposite, matter. The logical conclusion is that the physical body is simply the product of erroneous thinking, over which an understanding of spiritual being and true identity gives us full dominion.
