Testimonies of Healing

My gratitude for Christian Science, put...

From the August 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My gratitude for Christian Science, put into words, gives only a faint glimpse of the wonderful joy that its teachings have brought into my life. The spiritual understanding of the Bible which I have gained through the intelligent explanations given in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, has been such that I find myself able to apply it to every situation with which I am confronted.

Undesirable traits of character, as well as a sense of lack, have dropped from me through the years in which I have been a student. The physical benefits have been too numerous to mention. I have been healed of a serious heart condition, sinus trouble, and a nervous condition which had been present since childhood, through the study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and the periodicals.

For all of these steps of progress I am deeply grateful, but in order that others may know just how applicable the teachings of Christian Science are to help and heal, even through the understanding of children, I should like to relate a healing which my son experienced when he was nine years of age.

I was away from home at business all day. One afternoon I was called on the telephone by my housekeeper and told that my son had caught his arm in an electric clothes wringer and that I should hurry home. At once I called a practitioner, and en route home I denied that there was, or could ever have been, any injury to God's idea, because that idea is spiritual.

When I arrived home I found that the next-door neighbor, who was a medical student, had been summoned by the screams of my son, and he had helped to free the child from the machine. He had already examined my son's arm and said it was broken in four places and should be set immediately. My son refused all medical assistance and said that if we would only leave him alone with God, he would prove that this was not true. There seemed to be great fear and confusion in the household, and I reported this to the practitioner, who lovingly calmed the fears expressed. He also said he felt that the boy had a right to try to make his demonstration. Within a few hours the boy was up and around the house, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and refusing to allow anyone to see the arm or to say that it was injured. In three days the arm was completely healed, to the satisfaction of the neighbor and the family; and one week later I saw the boy swinging with both hands from a branch of a tree in the garden.

This is only one of the countless experiences which I could relate as proof of the healing power of God, brought about through the teachings of Christian Science. It was my privilege to have class instruction, which has blessed me immeasurably. I am deeply grateful to God, our Father-Mother, to Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and to Mrs. Eddy for giving us Christian Science, the final revelation of Truth.—
