Testimonies of Healing

On the quotation page of her "Miscellaneous Writings"...

From the August 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On the quotation page of her "Miscellaneous Writings" our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has written a poem, the last verse of which reads (p. vii):

"My world has sprung from Spirit,
In everlasting day;
Whereof, I've more to glory,
Wherefor, have much to pay."

This verse has been reminding me for some time that I too "have much to pay" in the way of expressing gratitude for all the good that has come into my experience through the study of Christian Science.

In our home we have witnessed many healings of various physical disorders. Our daughter at a very early age was instantaneously healed of the effects of an accident when she was struck by a fast-moving automobile. In my own experience the overcoming of a severe stomach trouble was brought about through persistent effort. Finding that different foods seemed to upset me, I would discontinue their use, until I arrived at the place where only the simplest food could be eaten without great difficulty. During all this time I was able to carry on my daily work. Strength was demonstrated day by day, and finally, with the help of earnest practitioners at different times and through my own faithful study of our Leader's writings, I gained my freedom from the fear of food. The joy of once again being able to eat what was set before me was indescribable.

Over three years ago I was transferred from one city to another, and it was several months before the members of my family could follow. At times loneliness and homesickness overwhelmed me. One day when the struggle seemed particularly difficult, I spent several hours in a Christian Science Reading Room, studying and praying for a way out of this despondency. All at once I remembered having read in a current issue of the Christian Science Sentinel a statement from the Board of Directors regarding the use of our Leader's hymns. In answer to inquiries as to how often these hymns should be used, the Directors quoted from a letter in which Mrs. Eddy pointed out the great value of their frequent use and indicated their particular office of spiritualizing the thought of the congregation.

Knowing that what I really needed was a spiritualization of consciousness, I began to go over in thought the words of these hymns. The fourth verse of "Christ My Refuge" (Poems by Mrs. Eddy, p. 12) was especially illumined:

"And o'er earth's troubled, angry sea
I see Christ walk,
And come to me, and tenderly,
Divinely talk."

I realized that the Christ, the truth about God and man, was present at that moment and was tenderly assuring me that man is perfect, complete, joyous, confident, successful, and satisfied. Immediately my thinking brightened, a great sense of lightness and freedom took possession of me, and I knew that the victory over homesickness and depression had been won.

For the privilege of being a Christian Scientist and of having the teachings of our great Master, Christ Jesus, and of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, to live by, I am truly grateful.—

I am glad to add a word of praise and gratitude to God for the healings recounted in my husband's testimony and for the inexpressible peace that an understanding of Christian Science has brought into our home.

The healing of our little girl, mentioned above, was a very sacred experience. Although I witnessed the accident, I am grateful to say that the consciousness of the allness of Truth dispelled fear and enabled me to take the necessary human steps. I called a practitioner for help, and within the first half-hour every manifestation of discord was met. Later in the evening, when the driver of the car telephoned to inquire about the child's condition, the youngster wanted to know who he was, where he lived, and if he had any children of his own. On being told that he had some children, she replied, "Daddy, isn't it nice that it happened, else we wouldn't have known the man?" The complete absence of blame or resentment in the child's thought was a healing balm to the whole situation and taught a lesson that will always be remembered by us.

I am particularly grateful for our periodicals and for church membership and the many blessings growing out of this association.—
