Testimonies of Healing

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...

From the April 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 410), "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger." During the war years these trials were hard and numerous, and indeed they continue. I wish to express my sincere gratitude for having come through with the sense of having been tried, purified, and strengthened.

For the spiritual support of the ninety first Psalm I am also grateful. During severe aerial bombing attacks it sometimes seemed difficult to do more than repeat verses from this wonderful psalm, especially when I was doing duty as a warden. On one occasion when it looked as if a flying bomb was coming straight for our home, I ran into the front garden and declared loudly (Ps. 91:10), "There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." The flying bomb turned in a circle on its glide and fell and exploded some distance away. This was for us the most outstanding instance of God's protection, although there were many others, and I am very grateful for all of them.

The flying-bomb period occurred during my term of Readership in our local church. Services continued without a break, and no one left the building even when flying bombs roared overhead. I am grateful, too, that our church building sustained no war damage.
