I became interested in Christian Science through reading a series of articles that were published in a well-known magazine many years ago. These articles were called "Christian Science Exposed." In his attempt to discredit Christian Science, the author quoted a few sentences from the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After I had come across some of these quotations and perceived the faulty logic of the writer in using them in his arguments, I desired to get possession of the book and read all of it.
A short time afterward I was visiting a relative in a distant city. In this home I found Science and Health. When I asked to borrow it, she told me that she could not lend it to me, but informed me that I could borrow a copy at the Reading Room a few blocks away. I purchased a copy immediately and began reading it as soon as I got on the train. I had gone into the smoking car, as I always did, to smoke one cigar after another. This time, however, I became so interested in what I was reading that I did not smoke. I continued to read the book after reaching my home. I had no desire to smoke the next morning, and I emptied my pockets that were filled with cigars. I did not at first fully realize I had been healed of the smoking habit.
Since that time I have solved many problems through the application of Christian Science, sometimes with the help of practitioners and often without their help. I am indeed grateful for all that this Science has done for me. I am very thankful that the inspiration came to Mrs. Eddy to give to the world that spiritual understanding of divine Science which she discovered in the Bible and which heals sickness and sin.
