Filled with gratitude to God, I should...

From the November 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Filled with gratitude to God, I should like to testify to the healing power of Christian Science, for great are the blessings that I have been privileged to experience in the years I have known of this Science.

In Isaiah (58:9) we read, "Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am." God always answers our call when we turn to Him wholeheartedly, as is shown in the following instance. One day I was going downstreet to keep a business appointment and on my way stepped on a stone in such a manner as to displace a bone in my foot, and the pain was excruciating. After the appointment a friend drove me home, and I immediately began to study the Bible and our textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. As I studied, the pain became less, but I was still suffering. I had to be on my feet a great deal, because there was much to do in my eight-room house, and there was also my office work. When I went upstairs that evening, a medical nurse living in the house at the time offered to drive me to a doctor to have the bone put back into place. I thanked her and said I wished to rely on God. When I was going downstairs the pain was so severe that in my agony I cried out, "God, please help me!" and instantly the bone went into place, and I was free.

I should also like to tell of an instance wherein it was proved that among the many good qualities man reflects is honesty. One dark, wet night in late November some years ago, I was left alone in the office and while working became conscious of being watched. As I looked up, I saw a man peering into the office. All the offices on that floor were closed, and as far as I knew, I was alone in the building. I glanced across the street only to see those offices and stores in darkness. I continued with my work, and finally I put it aside and called, asking if there was anything I could do for him. He came into the office and said he came for money. I kept saying to myself: "God made man in His image and likeness. Man therefore is honest and kind; and being honest, he could not take what does not belong to him; neither can he give what does not belong to him. Being kind, man could not harm anyone." I talked to the stranger as if he had asked for a loan. A few times he raised his voice when he said he came for money, and at those times I felt a great deal of compassion for him, and his voice would again become normal. Finally he backed out of the office and did not return.
