FULFILLING THE LAW

From the November 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE law of God is the law of Love. It is the universal and impartial law of perfection, harmony, and peace to man and the universe. As, through Christian Science, we learn to understand the ever-presence and all-power of this law and obey it, we find that it is the law of annihilation to the claim of evil in all its forms, the law of annulment to the so-called laws of matter. At the same time it is the law of regeneration, recuperation, and reconstruction to the human belief of mind and body, thus restoring harmony, health, and happiness to human affairs. It is the law of adjustment and harmony to every detail of our lives.

Mary Baker Eddy has told us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 117): "Obedience is the offspring of Love; and Love is the Principle of unity, the basis of all right thinking and acting; it fulfils the law. We see eye to eye and know as we are known, reciprocate kindness and work wisely, in proportion as we love." There are numberless ways of expressing obedience to God, but they are all based on love for God and man. The more we love, show forth the nature of divine Love, the better we obey God and demonstrate His government through right thinking and acting. The law of God is fulfilled as we meet the demand of divine Principle, Love, that we be perfect, pure, loving, and truthful.

Spiritual man is always obedient to God. As His reflection he cannot be otherwise; his loyalty and obedience to his divine source are unquestionable and unquestioning. In contrast, human sense needs to learn what obedience to God means and how it is achieved. A show of obedience to God, with mental reservations, is not obedience; it does not fulfill His law, because it lacks love as the incentive.
