IT is the work of every Christian Scientist to sponsor the mental advancement of mankind by transforming the world about him, the universe of mankind, into the "home of marvellous light" prophesied by Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. "A right apprehension of the wonderful utterances of him who 'spake as never man spake,'" she declares of the teachings of Christ Jesus, "would despoil error of its borrowed plumes, and transform the universe into a home of marvellous light,— 'a consummation devoutly to be wished'" (Unity of Good, p. 17).
To the Christian Scientist, Spirit and things spiritual constitute the only reality. The divine cosmos is the infinitude of being, forever embraced in the one Mind, God, expressed in the spiritual individuality called man and perpetually developing in God's expanding universe as His eternal reflection. In the perception and acceptance of this reality is the Scripture fulfilled. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined" (Isa. 9:2). It is only in the ascending perception of existence that thought rises above mortality and matter; in the illumination of spiritual sense that we pass from death (the material concept) to life (the scientific spiritual reality), which the Science of Mind reveals.
The Christian Scientist reads in the signs of the times the unmistakable conversion of thought from the contradiction and distraction of the materially unreal to the immovable serenity of the spiritually real. In the last decade can be discerned the evidence of the real appearing as the righteousness that rises above tyranny and the fear of oppression. The moral purpose shows the human consciousness awakening to the divine demand that every tormenting, illegitimate phase of mortal belief be banished as an outlaw, or false concept. Though two wars in half a century have rocked the structure of material civilization, the very trials of hatred and brutality have forced many to hear the sacred message of Life eternal and of the indestructibility of spiritual man. Through Science human hearts have been lifted above the ordeal of death and destruction and exalted to a purer perception of divine reality. Men have been drawn closer into the warmth of infinite Love with its ever-unfolding perfection, harmony, and endless progress. Thus they confirm the substance of the wonderful utterances of the Master—that mankind learn the nature of immortality through overcoming mortality. Thus they prove the resistless peace of spiritual understanding to be the will of God. They follow the life line of the Master in proving the scientific perfection of God and His creation.
