INDIVIDUALS strive to govern their own affairs, and nations seek to be in control of their own destiny. And rightly so, because it is mankind's God-given right to manifest perfect self-government. To achieve this, nations and individuals must learn to think spiritually. They must learn that righteous control, considered individually, nationally, and universally, is not to be found in self-will, in politics, or in human planning, but in obedience to God and His Christ.
It was the longing and determination to govern their own affairs which brought to Moses and his fellow Israelites the God inspired impetus and courage to undertake the march out of Egypt and bondage into freedom and self-government. Out of this worthy effort came the establishment of the Jewish nation and its growth in moral and spiritual power, which led to the appearing of Christ Jesus, the Saviour, who so gloriously embodied and demonstrated the Christ.
It was the flaming, consecrated resolution to win religious freedom, to exercise their right to think, act, accomplish, and enjoy without oppression, which nerved the Pilgrims for their perilous journey to and settlement in a new land, which was fraught with hardships and dangers. From this self reliant, brave beginning sprang a new nation, with free schools and the recognition of individual rights. This provided greater opportunity for spiritual growth and enlightenment and made way for the final revelation of Truth by our great Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. It was religious freedom that furnished her the right to explain her teachings, write the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," establish her Church, and chart its government through the divinely inspired Manual of The Mother Church.
